How To Order Healthy At A Steakhouse

Date nights at a fancy steakhouse are my absolute jam. I love walking in and pretending I’m important and ordering a fancy drink as I sip with my pinky in the air. I also love how you can mix and match so many different things to pair with your beautiful steak and essentially can’t go wrong.

Eating healthy at a steakhouse might sound like an oxymoron but it’s actually incredibly simple. Let me break it down for you:

Starters

You always want to aim for the raw bar here. There is literally nothing on a raw bar menu that is super fattening. The only thing you want to avoid would be creamy sauces like aioli. Stick to marinaras, horseradish and fresh lemon.

Don’t like seafood? Go for a nice mixed salad. Avoid items such as bacon bits, ranch or bleu cheese dressing and instead aim for vinaigrettes or a simple lemon squeeze. Always order your dressing on the side as they usually contain a high fat content and an unnecessary amount of drizzle anyway.

Entrees

Well we are obviously going to order steak here. Duh. I’m not a monster. The trick here is ordering a lean cut of meat and avoiding sauces. In many cultures, sauces on steaks is considered a mortal sin. Salt and pepper should be perfectly fine if the meat is top quality! Typically you are going to find the following cuts at a steakhouse:

-Filet Mignon

-Ribeye

-NY Strip

The leanest cut of the 3 by far is the filet. You’re looking at about 10-15 grams of fat per 4 ounces(depending on how well trimmed it is). The worst is the ribeye. You’re looking at about 25 grams of fat per 4 ounces.

Sides

Ah steak house sides. Little side orders of gluttony and happiness. Mac n cheese. French fries. Whipped potatoes. Not today devil. Avoid loaded calories by ordering some of the following items:

-Plain baked potato

-Side of rice

-Roasted vegetables such as sauteed spinach or mushrooms

Dessert

There is none because if you’re reading this you’ve got fit goals and dessert doesn’t fit into that on a non cheat day. You’re welcome

Bon Appetit!
